S7-200 Tip : Connect to Ethernet

Note! Starting with STEP 7-Micro/WIN Version 3.2.1, a Ethernet Wizard was added.
As a result, the new wizard now provides an easier method of programming this task than is shown here.

This tip shows how you can use the CoBox (made by the company Lantronix) with a SIMATIC S7-200 programmable logic controller. The modems connect an S7-200 CPU to a remote programming device or PC by means of Ethernet. In this way, you can program or monitor a remote CPU with STEP 7-Micro/WIN 32 version 3.0 by means of Ethernet.

S7 ETHERNET/MPI Communication Server for SIMATIC S7-300/S7-400

Overview

The SIEMENS S7 ETHERNET/MPI Server (hereafter referred to as the “S7ETHMPI Server” or “S7ETHMPI” or “Server”) is a Microsoft Windows application program that acts as a communication protocol Server and allows other Windows application programs to access to the data from Siemens S7-300 and S7-400 controllers using the Ethernet gateway (communication adapter-cable) for MPI, providing interface between 10/100 Mbps Ethernet and Siemens MPI bus. The connection is possible with a hub or switch or Mia a crossover cable directly with PC network card, the used protocol is standard TCP/IP. Any Microsoft Windows program that is capable of acting as a DDE, FastDDE, Any SuiteLink or OPC Client may use the S7ETHMPI Server.

There are two different S7ETHMPI Server versions described in this manual:
- Server version (ordering number DR 470 10), supporting SuiteLink, FastDDE and DDE protocols; this version hereafter is referred to as the “Suite Link & DDE” version.
- Server version (ordering number DR 470 11), supporting OPC and DDE protocols; this version hereafter is referred to as the “OPC & DDE” version;

S7-200 Tip :Using Excel to Read Data

This programming example uses third-party software to read data from a SIMATIC S7-200 series CPU to a Windows application. A simple pumping system is simulated with the data being sent to different cells in Microsoft Excel.

S7-200 Tip :Using a TD200

Two TD 200s (version 1.1 or later)

S7-200 Tip: Using a Bar Code Reader

Special Hardware Requirements:

One PC/PPI cable
One converter (depends on the interface of the bar code reader: for example, a 9-pin male to 25-pin female converter, or a null modem adapter for swapping lines 2 and 3)
One bar code reader
One bar code decoder (sometimes reader and decoder are one unit)

NOTE: One problem might occur. Because the SIMATIC S7-200 and the bar code reader both behave as slaves (data communications equipment, or DCE), the data transfer of each device tries to run in the same direction. This means that both the receive and transmit data lines end up connected to each other (lines 2 and 3). You can avoid this problem by setting up the converter properly or by using an appropriate wiring adapter (a null modem adapter).

This example demonstrates how to use an S7-200 CPU to receive data from a bar code reader by means of the Freeport communication mode of the CPU. You can use Freeport mode to transmit data and to receive data. In this case, you are receiving data from the bar code reader. The CPU receives the information through Port 0.
